Berry Gordy's Childhood

Berry Gordy was the seventh child born out in a close-knit family on November 28, 1929. Gordy struggled in school but he loved music for the heart of sole of it. Berry Gordy was interested in songwriting at age 7 but that all changed when he was kicked out of his high school music class, and he dropped out of school in order to pursue a boxing career.

Gordy’s family was part of a massive migration of African-Americans after World War 1. Gordy’s parents became entrepreneurs and instilled their children into Gospel of hard work. Berry Gordy Jr’s parents played a major role in financing early years of Berry’s business.
